Bungee Jumping is thought to have originated in the South Pacific Islands, where, as a test of courage, brave young men would jump from tall wooden platforms with vines wrapped and tied around their ankles to stop them hitting the ground or water. New Zealander, AJ Hackett, witnessed some of these leaps and was absolutely fascinated by this amazing feat of bravado. Then, after seeing the “Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club” bungee jumping from the Clifton Suspension Bridge in 1979 he realised it was still a very dangerous activity and he looked into making the experience even safer for participants. Soon he had developed a tried and tested piece of “Super Elastic” bungee equipment. The word, “bungy” or “bungee” coming from New Zealand Kiwi slang for an elastic strap.

Hackett tested it out himself in public by successfully bungee jumping off the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Now, he had introduced commercial bungee jumping to the world and thrill seekers couldn’t wait to jump from great heights with just a huge “super elastic band” stopping them from hitting the water or ground.
