The first modern and practical operational Helicopter was probably the Focke-Wulf FW61, and was produced in Germany by Prof Heinrich Focke in 1936. It sorted out a vast array of problems that had blighted and hindered developments of this type of aircraft for many years. It was not a great production success but the next one he developed in 1942, the FA223, was the first large helicopter and it could lift 1500lbs  (680kgs) and cruise at 125mph  (201km/h). Capable of flying at more than 23000 ft (7000 metres) it was the first Helicopter to fly across the English Channel.
Also in 1942, Russian American Igor Sikorsky developed his own version with a single rotor and the name Sikorsky is still instantly recognisable as a Helicopter all over the world. Sikorsky's R-4 was the world's first mass produced machine, the only helicopter used by the Allied Forces in World War 2 and more than 130 of them were built. The aircraft's ability to take off and land vertically, fly forwards, backwards and sideways combined with the ability to hover made the helicopter a valuable asset to the military and it has been used in many combat campaigns since the second world war.

Modern day Helicopters are vastly improved from these pioneer craft and now almost anyone can have a marvellous and exciting Helicopter Flight Experience for a relatively low financial outlay. The Top Helicopter Experiences start from as little as £39 and this makes a Helicopter Flight Gift superb value for money.
