Football is by far the world's most popular sport with well over 200 international teams from all parts of the globe playing the beautiful game. Every four years the best 32 of these international teams take part in the massive FIFA World Cup, the biggest team sport tournament in the world.
Football, also known as Soccer, is only one of the many games that originated in the UK and was then exported around the planet through the once massive and widespread British Empire. The modern rules game has origins from the 18th century being played at English Public Schools, although there are records of a form of football being played from as far back as the 12th century. In the 14th century the game was even banned for a while by King Edward III, and in the 15th century it was also banned in Scotland.
Football archive books show that the first professional league was founded in England in 1888 and is still just simply called the "Football League", the Irish League followed this in 1890 and now there are hundreds of leagues around the world generating many billions of pounds of turnover each year. Many of the top games are watched by billions of fans around the world by tuning into satellite TV broadcasts. The first ever International match was in 1870 between England and Scotland and the oldest surviving club competition still competed for is the Football Association Cup, played in England from 1871 and then followed three years later in Scotland with the Scottish Cup.
