Great Golf Gift Ideas

from Greatest Gifts.

The game of Golf is one of the world's greatest sports and is played and enjoyed by millions all over the globe. The modern game of golf started in Scotland in the 15th century although there are disputed theories as to the playing of an ancient form of the game, but Scotland still takes the honours as the real inventor of the rules of the modern game. The first written records are by King James II in 1457 that banned the game as it was thought to be a big distraction to people learning the art of archery, which was very much needed.  King James IV took up golf himself and repealed the ban in 1502, which led to an upsurge in popularity for the game. St Andrews in Scotland is where golf has been played on the Old Course since 1574. Even today players can still have great golf experience days at St Andrews. The official oldest course in the world is recognised as the great and beautiful Musselburgh Links in East Lothian, Scotland. It has written records of golf being played there as far back as the year 1672. The oldest written records of the rules and laws of golf date way back to 1744. The oldest golf tournament played in the world is called "The Open Championship" and it was first played for at Prestwick Golf Course in Ayrshire, Scotland in the year 1860. There are many lovely golf courses and links where golf experience days in Scotland can really be enjoyed. In 1754 the "Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews" was formed and they set the rules of the game being played and helped standardise the game. In 2004 the newly formed "R&A" became the main ruling authority of golf all over the world. The exceptions being the USA and Mexico that were already under the rules of the United States Golf Association (USGA). The USGA and the R&A these days co-operate together to help make and standardise the rules of golf.
