Great Rugby Gift Ideas from www.GreatestGifts.co.uk

Rugby football is a variant of the game of football and originated in Rugby school in England sometime during the 19th century. In various published books about rugby there is a myth that in 1823 a pupil called William Webb Ellis broke the rules while playing in a normal football match. He apparently picked up the ball during play and then ran with it, thus creating the "rugby" version of football. The first written rules recorded in a book about rugby for this new game were created at Rugby School in the year 1845. By the 1860's hundreds of clubs were playing Rugby and then in 1871 the Rugby Football Union was founded among 21 original teams. In the same year the first International rugby football match took place between England and Scotland. Then in 1877 the number of players taking part per team was standardised at just 15 from the usual 20 players. The International matches were becoming very popular and by 1883 the four home nations of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales started an annual competition called the "Home Nations Championship". This became a very successful tournament and  is still played today but now France and Italy also take part in the modern "Six Nations" version of the competition. The game of rugby that was being played in Northern England came under fire from the Rugby Football Union for making payments to players to compensate them for lost wages. The RFU was against any form of professional in the game and this led to a split developing and the Northern Rugby Football Union was duly formed in 1895. This new union decided to amend some rules to make the game even more exciting and the two sporting codes eventually drifted even further apart with the NRFU introducing part-time professionals in 1898. Eventually many Northern Leagues were being formed and soon this new popular code became known simply as Rugby League. Rugby League also became extremely popular in Australia, France and New Zealand and also various other countries to a lesser extent. The history of the very physical sport can be found in some really informative books about rugby which make such fantastic gifts for fans.
